Are property owners obligated to rebuild a burnt-down house when they buy an empty plot of land if they don't need it and don't want to? That's the question Reddit user u/lovemycar66 asks the popular moral guidance subreddit r/AmITheAsshole in this post. The user explains that he purchased a plot of land that previously had a house demolished due to a fire, but a perfect livable garage with a newly installed "in-law" apartment remained standing. The user moved on to the property and determined they were legally allowed to live in the garage permanently, figuring he would never need to actually build a new house on the property until or unless he decides he wants to.
It truly feels like this shouldn't be such a huge deal if you're not bothering anyone. And it seems like this property value business is just an excuse for the neighbors to push the new person around. To be fair, it sounds like some of the neighbors pushing for a house to be rebuilt on the property knew the previous owners and are probably reminded of a tragedy when they see a largely empty lot, but most Reddit users determined u/lovemycar has done no wrong here. As we all know, living with a group of "active" neighbors can be a bit of a nightmare, like this HOA Karen who complained about guide dog training or this entitled neighbor dad who tried usurping a driveway and got towed.
