Relationships are hard. It feels socially risky to share your feelings with people, and while most of the time folks are willing to respect the effort, there are some rough moments to be had. Thing is, getting rudely rejected is a great way to find out that that person wasn't right for you anyway. So while it's painful, there's at least some way to spin the situation into "progress."
