This woman is wondering if she has done something wrong. I say screw everyone else involved except for her and the poor mother.

The woman who stepped in's BF is a jerk for not supporting her... and it sounds like this other family has been absolutely terrible to the poor mother. I mean, typically as a rule of thumb, you should mind your business in public and not get your nose all up in other people's business. But this instance is an absolute exception. As commenters have already noted, she did the right thing by assessing the situation before stepping in but at a certain point, you HAVE to say something.
Props to her for being a hero instead of a bystander. There's just something about dining with your in-laws that never really works out.
