Employee Asks for a Raise, Gets Non-Dishwasher Safe Company Cup Instead

You've rehearsed your speech. You've got your talking points. You finally have that one-on-one time with your boss scheduled so you can argue why you deserve a raise. You have the meeting. You think it goes great. You expect to hear back soon. Turns out you don't get that raise. Instead, they give you a “gift.” Stock options? No. They give you yet another company branded, non-dishwasher safe cup instead of that raise you know you deserve.

Sound familiar? This is what happened to @heycarlyhey, who thankfully has a sense of humor about the whole thing. She shared her story on Instagram and TikTok, which was then reposted by @humorousresources.

They say laughter is the best medicine. But you know what would have been better than laughter? Getting that raise!

Let's be honest, though. The most insulting part of this whole “gift” thing is the fact that it's not dishwasher safe. I mean, seriously?! Not only is your employer making you work more than 40 hours a week, but also they're throwing in extra labor now by making you hand wash that cup. I mean, that's just rude. This is 2022, not the Pleistocene era. Let us use our dishwashers.

Aside for that, it seems crystal clear that the old tricks for keeping employees happy aren't working anymore. Not in an age when Beyoncé told us to release our jobs, which of course we would do except we have to pay for a few things like rent, internet, and streaming services. For better or for worse, the best way to thank someone for their hard work in the office is to reward them monetarily, especially in an age when workers are recognizing their worth and are no longer easily replaceable

It's time for employers to accept this as one of the greatest changes in the workplace in the past couple years. But in the meantime, we will have to wait for our horrible bosses to catch up and understand these demands. At least for now, we can try to bring some levity to a difficult situation, just like @heycarlyhey did.

We've seen other stories like this in recent months. Like this roundup of TikToks detailing what various employees got from their bosses instead of a raise.
