First dates will always be a little uncomfortable. We try to display the best versions of ourselves, highlighting our accomplishments and brushing past our problematic and probably offensive opinions. Our nerves may be somewhat at fault for altering our personalities, but where is the line? At what point are we just pretending to be people that we are obviously not? And then, think about this, the person across from you is probably pulling the exact same sh*t, and now you're just two full-grown adults performing an impromptu improv scene with no audience but yourselves, and only touching on vanilla topics of conversation in a merciless effort to present yourself as nothing if not inexplicably agreeable — and cute of course. Are you not embarrassed?? I know I am.
Sure, we must share certain things in common with the characters we've developed and executed oh so well... But deep down we know there is much much more to the real thing. For better and for worse.
So, any spicy plans for this weekend?
So how do we handle the imminent discomfort that is bound to come with a first date? Do we avoid them altogether? We can try. Or we can just try to do the best we can, and at a minimum, try not to be a jerk. This guy clearly was overcompensating for something and didn't get the 'Don't be an a**hole' memo.
