The OP is this tale is beside himself in laughter. He is a Brit that named his dog 'Yankee.' You know, like the 'New York Yankees' or 'Yankee Doodle went to town riding on a pony.' Yankee is a word that people say all the time. There is no deep attachment to the word. But OP has been told that is a super offensive word and that he should change his dog's name immediately. This man happens to be OP's sisters new boyfriend. This is the first time they met. It's safe to say he made quite the impression on OP. The new boyfriend went so far as to say, 'Yankee is essentially a slur used against Americans' and is basically like naming the dog the n word.' Let's take a moment to unpack that. John Mulaney actually says it best. Anytime anyone compares any word to the n-word just remember this quote, "If you're comparing the badness of two words, and you won't even say one of them? That's the worse word." Case closed. Woof. We really can't believe this one. Keep reading to help the moral judges of Reddit to decide who is the real a$$hole here.
What's in a name? What makes a name offensive? The second question is usually pretty obvious. But if you have to ask... that does increase intrigue.
'Yankee' is a cute name. British people often call me a 'yank.' I take zero offense to it because it hasn't been offensive since what, 1776? The dog even likes it. Once a dog recognizes their name during training it's essential to keep it
Asking anyone to change their name of their dog for any reason is super audacious.
