The beginning of social media feels like ancient history. We've been plugged into our social screens for about twenty years now, and we're not planning on leaving anytime soon. The first experiences many of us had on a social network were on Club Penguin, Tumblr, MySpace, or Facebook. Club Penguin may not be the first thing that comes to mind as a network that is classified as social media but it's literally where we had our first internet BFs. Maybe we never met them in person, but what we had was real! Fads we participated in during the beginning era seem strange now. For example, the Facebook Poke was one of the things that made no sense, and yet we all happily participated in poke wars and exchanges without really understanding what drove us to poke people. Twitter user @tinaqueen_15 pointed out what a weird and wild time that was, and people took to the comments to reminisce about all the good albeit weird times they had with the Facebook Poke button.
We don't even know what poking meant. When someone poked, we figured it was common etiquette to poke back. If they kept poking back, we would probably get annoyed because we literally didn't understand the point of this whole exchange. We never remember how those poking wars ended either.
The only poke we get is the one when we were into someone and wanted to remind them we exist as a potential love interest. We assumed that once we sent that poke their way, they would understand that we were interested in them. It was such a simple, low-effort way to flirt without saying anything at all.
