Kitten With Paralyzed Hind Legs Determinably Fights To Start Walking Again

Not every cat is born as lucky as another. Some cats go through experiences that leave them disabled and make it harder to get through life, and some of them are just born a little different and have to struggle a little more from the get-go. That doesn't mean that they can't thrive. We have seen awwdorable three-legged cats live their best lives, we've seen cute blind kittens persevering despite the odds. They can do it. It's just that sometimes they need a little help.

That's how Mohan's story starts. Mohan the kitten started off with completely paralyzed back legs, but he was fierce, he was determined, and with a little help from some very caring humans, he slowly but surely managed to start walking again. And now… well, take a look for yourselves.

According to Love Meow, the founder of the Kitten Carer Rescue, Jessica Ruf was contacted about a kitten with paralyzed hind legs. The kitten needed help, and Jessica immediately took sprang into action. Upon arrival to the shelter, the kitten was in rough shape. He was all skin and bones, lethargic, hungry and covered in fleas.

"It was evident he had no movement in the lower half of his body, as he would drag his torso and legs across the ground to move only using his front paws," Jessica explained. Yet, even with everything that he has been through, the kitten was motivated to eat and had a loud and fierce meow from the very beginning.

At the time, Mohan was estimated to be three weeks old, and Courtney, a foster volunteer of the rescue, welcomed him into his her home. "He snuggled in close to me all night and just stared at me with those big beautiful eyes—I knew he was happy to be safe," Courtney said. "He was hugging my fingers and a teddy all night, purring."

They visited the vet and were told that the kitten had no feeling from his waist down to the tip of his tail. "Mohan has some compression between L1 and L2 in his spinal cord. This is likely from a serious fall," Courtney explained. "We hope that acupuncture will help with Mohan's recovery, as it increases the blood circulation and resolves swelling."

While continuing with physical therapy at home, Mohan was treated for a potential infection. "We really have high hopes for this little guy, he is such a fighter and wants to be on the go all the time." He was eager to walk around like other kittens, and even with the difficulties, nothing stopped him from having fun.

"He has such a spark in him! He is the cheekiest little guy who tries using his legs constantly and lets nothing get in the way," Courtney added. "He will always find a way to get where he needs to go. Every day it seems he is gaining more feeling in his lower half, with daily at-home therapy. The movement in his legs now is just incredible."

In only a couple weeks, Mohan has progressed from dragging his hind limbs to balancing on all fours. His energy and mobility improved, and finally, he showed his true colors. Turns out that this little kitten likes to tackle everything that moves and climb literally anything he can. "Little Mohan has so much will and determination to use his legs and walk," Courtney said.

"Already I have seen him trying to push himself forward and he's even balancing on all four legs for a few seconds at a time. I feel like every minute I am seeing improvement," she added. Yesterday, Mohan had his first acupuncture session. He played, zipping around the room and getting love from the staff. "He was such a brave boy. When I picked him up in the evening, he was fast asleep in the car within minutes."

Today, he continues to amaze people as he lives every day to the fullest and is well on his way to walking on his feet.
