Reddit user u/Solo1961 posted this story where they "Maliciously Complied" to their boss's demands.
The incident took place when they were a teenager working at a hardware store. They describe that this was the kind of retail store where you needed to hand hold customers through their experience. Which involves greeting them at the door and then guiding them through the process.
You might be thinking to yourself, "Gee, that's absurd. I hate it when people try to help me when I go to a store." But believe me when I tell you that some people need this for every basic little thing. If you don't approach them and attempt to hold their hand they're going to leave you a bad review, despite never asking for help in the first place.
To make matters even more confusing. It is incredibly likely that they will even tell you "No I'm fine thanks." when you try to help them. This can mean that they actually DO want help. They just want you to ask them 2, 3, or sometimes even 4 times first. At this point, they will finally agree to your assistance.
This isn't even always a sure thing though. There are others who will get violently angry towards you and explode if you dare approach them a second time. So it's always a gamble. A gamble that you can never actually win.
That "catch-22" is a pretty good summary of why retail is hell.
