Our dogs can get a little possessive sometimes, it's just a part of their nature. So, to some extent, they all have a protection mode that they can turn on if they feel like something they love is in danger. Think about when male dogs urinate on the scent of another dog– they're protecting territory. Or if your dog runs away with a tennis ball, even in a playful way, he's being protective over property. And in one of this week's best Reddit videos, we saw a dog being very protective of their human. So protective in fact, that this little ankle-biter went after a full-grown moose!
A few facts for you before we continue: a moose can weigh up to 1500 pounds, the average dachshund weighs between 16 and 32 pounds, and this dog is the bravest dog I have ever seen in my life. In the video, the owner steps outside into the snow to take a cool, morning walk with their weiner dog, when a moose comes charging from across the road. The man jumps back, stunned, and the dog starts immediately going after the moose's ankles. Then, the dog draws the moose away a few steps, before circling back to trot inside with their human. The whole interaction lasts less than 20 seconds and is one of the scariest– but also most impressive– things I've seen in a long time.
When the video reached Reddit, people were astounded by the small dog's bravery, and the comments poured in to prove it. A few other people chimed in with biological facts about dachshunds and moose too, so the entire thing became a really insightful and feel-good thread. We put together the best comments down below for you to enjoy, so go ahead and enjoy!
This wiener dog didn't miss a beat when its owner came into harm's way. The pooch sprang straight into action, and went after an angry moose in order to give its owner time to escape. I've got to be honest, I don't know if I would've been brave enough to do the same thing. With how much snow is on the ground in the video, I don't even know if you could've convinced me to go outside that morning!
Ahhhh yes, the classic Napoleon complex. I grew up with a chihuahua and know this attribute of little dogs all too well. Napoleon Bonaparte was a French General who, due to his fearsome military reputation and somewhat small stature, became the namesake for a condition where short or small people or animals overcompensate for their size with an abundance of noise. With dogs, this means that chihuahuas and other small breeds sometimes feel a need to bark and posture when around bigger dogs or animals in order to get respect. In this case though, I don't even think Napoleon would've been as fearless as this dog.
