Many moments of this monotony tick by before the tides turn and the rush comes. One moment you're folding a shirt for the 10,000th time. The next, you're wiping flecks of spit off your face as they fly from the furious mouth of a deranged customer. Screaming, eyes bulging, that vein in their neck pulsating. One too many things might have gone wrong in their personal life this week, but you, the lowly retail worker, had the audacity not to meet their inane, impossible demand. They're an animal, caged in their miserable existence, but they're taking their wild fury out on you.
Redditor u/komputerrkrewwz claims to have lived this dream of fleeing from retail hell and has posted this topic to the r/antiwork subreddit titled "Just Ran Away from Work." They clarified in the comment section that they work retail and have a "boomer" boss who they can't stand.
In the initial posting, 'komputerkrewwz' clarifies that "I told my boss I'm going for lunch, but I'm not coming back." suggesting that they would leave their manager eternally wondering what the heck happened to them.
Commenters resoundingly applauded the poster's actions. This is r/antiwork, after all. Commenters suggested various plots to elaborate the ruse further. These included fake kidnappings and telling the boss that they had "Just gone to lunch."
"This is the part where you hire two actors from Craigslist or somewhere to dress up like scary g men and show up at your old workplace asking for you. Make that boss question what happened to their dying day," suggested GabrielofNottingham.
A surprisingly high number of responses shared stories of workers doing similar things when they couldn't handle the bullshit anymore.
"I once quit my job at McDonald's by jumping out the drive-through window. True story." fallingfrog commented.
"Before I got hired in at my current job, one of the guys also left for lunch and never came back. The guys who were there when it happened still sometimes joke that "He's still on lunch." shared ReaGeous.
