The Disneyfication of Greek mythology in 1997 animation Hercules is pretty hilarious if you're familiar with the real (and very messed up) lore. In the movie, Zeus, Hera and Hercules are presented as one big wholesome family. The actual legend is full of adultery, violence, revenge, and terrible parenting. In the Disney movie, Hercules is the beloved child of Zeus and Hera. He is stripped of his immortality by Hades and forced to life as a mortal on earth. In the original myth, Hercules is not the son of Hera; he's the son of a mortal princess called Alcmene, who was one of Zeus' many mortal victims. You can hardly call Alcmene a mistress, as Zeus disguised himself as her husband, Amphitryon, in order to seduce her. When Hera found out Alcmene was pregnant with Zeus' child, she used her powers to prevent the unborn Hercules from becoming the ruler of the Mycenae Kingdom. On top of that, when Hercules was born, Hera sent two snakes to kill the baby in his crib. When that didn't work, years later Hera cast a spell on Hercules that made him kill his wife and children. So, yeah. Pretty toxic parents to say the least.
