Font - I am a single mother of a 12 year old girl, whom I've raised alone from birth. My brother owns a Yorkie. Oftentimes, when we converse, he interjects with crap about how his being a dog dad is really stressful and expensive and he can't do the things he'd like because of it. He purchases his dog many elaborate items. He just recently finished a month

Font - elaborate items. He just recently finished a month long trip in Europe (left the dog with a family member, used this as an excuse to complain because he wanted to spend 3 months in Europe but couldn't find anyone, other than a kennel, to watch his dog for that amount of time. Can't take

Font - watch his dog for that amount of time. Can't take his dog to a kennel because she doesn't have all of her shots, she also refuses to use the restroom outdoors, she's not a puppy) During the same convo he says to me "oh my goodness I can't wait to get back to her, it's so crazy being a parent. All the sacrifices we have to make go unappreciated..."

Font - I explained to him that he's not an actual parent and he got upset. I get that dogs are like babies for us, I'm not arguing that, but comparing his free life to that of any parent is insulting and I won't stand for it.

Font - Blatant Doughnut 3 days ago Partassipant [1]] NTA. I have 6 dogs of my own and frequently foster (we have 10 or more in the house about 50% of the time) and it is still not on par with raising a child. Yes, there are challenges to having pets but it's not the same. To be honest I'm kind of judging your brother for complaining about his one 10 lb dog...

Font - butternutattack. 2 days ago Asshole Aficionado [13] I think the "pet parent" phase lasts as long as the pet's childhood. I started fostering my kitty when he was a five day old bottle baby. I got up with him every two hours, changed his blankets, the whole momma cat thing. I was momma. However, he is now ten (52 in cat years). So what I have now is a spoiled room mate who rules our apartment with a fluffy iron fist. Note: In case it isn't clear I'm being facetious.

Perhaps because I've worked most of my adult life in childcare and understand much more goes into that, but it seems an unfair comparison.

Font - boniemonie 3 days ago Partassipant [3] NTA. I think he has a lot of growing up to do. Children are going to be a bit of a shock: if he ever has them. And I totally agree, he is devaluing parenting if he feels children and pets require the same level of responsibility and work. Especially if his doggo hasn't been properly trained.

Font - coffeerepeat 3 days ago Partassipant [1] NTA. Also, I'm totally gonna be the asshole saying this but- kids live longer than dogs. Objectively, they're much more commitment and work just because of that. Also, is he really that great of a pet "parent" if he doesn't get his dog the shots it needs or have it house trained? As a parent and having pets people like that irk me.
