When you're a kid, everything you experience is just a tiny part of the vast unknown. You have yet to figure out so many things about the seemingly endlessly large world that even trying to think about all of the possibilities out there can make your head spin. Thankfully you have the adults in your life to guide you through this treacherously infinite environment. And you, a wide-eyed child, know that you can take whatever the adults tell you for granted. Why would they ever tell you white lies or lead you astray?
Thankfully, as we get older, we learn this isn't even remotely true. We slowly come to terms with the fact that our parents, teachers, and other mentors have been carefully feeding us little white lies and leading us astray to protect us.
As it turns out, things like quicksand aren't nearly as threatening as we might have once been led to believe. But while quicksand isn't going to suddenly suck us into the earth as we walk home from school, there are other very real dangers out there that tales like this taught us to be very much aware of.
