There are a long list of common phobias out there that don't really make a lot of sense, although we can't help having them. Being in the dark isn't automatically going to hurt you, for example, and most spiders are pretty harmless (unless you live somewhere like the Australian bush). However, there are others that make a hell of a lot of sense when you see the effect that they can have.
Near the top of this list is Thalassophobia, or fear of large bodies of water, such as the ocean. Even in this day and age, plenty of people get lost at sea and never found again. It was incredibly fortunate, then, that one person managed to be found by @trawlertom1 after yelling for help at 4am.
