It's a classic story: cat decides it's done with outdoor life and chooses to adopt a human. If that happens to you… you're stuck. The cat has chosen you, and it is now your responsibility to take care of it whether you want to or not. Sorry, we don't make the rules. The thing is though… cats are smart. They're sneaky and sophisticated, and at this point, they know that this happens. They know that humans will pamper them and give them food, so sometimes, cats will just wander off, and you'll end up finding your cat in the most random place possible. Suddenly, you'll realize that your cats have been living a double life and the reason that your cat is so heckin' chonky is because it's being fed in two different houses.
There is a difference though between finding an injured, malnourished, clearly-in-need-of-help cat and taking them in and coming across a perfectly healthy cat outside and taking it. Some cat owners allow their cats to walk around outside. If those cats come to you… that doesn't mean that they're immediately yours. And this reddit user felt the need to reiterate and argue this point.
We understand - of course - that all the people who do this tend to have the best intentions in their hearts. They want to help cats, they want to give them warm homes, and yet… it's important to always, always, always check if the cat is actually a stray.
It's not just other humans that you might be taking these cats from. It's important to check, especially when it comes to stray kittens - whether the momma cat is around. Breaking up a family, whether feline or human, is horrible, and it's hard to believe that some people like the one in this comment actually exist.
