This mother and homeowner had had enough with her HOA and decided to get involved and uncovered a surprising secret. As she delved deeper into the dark and mysterious operations that her paymenters were funding she began to realize… There weren't any operations at all. The HOA did nothing
"The HOA shoveled the snow off the streets in winter and dealt with trash collection, so they were doing something worthwhile, right?" her daughter writes.
"Ha! No. The city controlled the snowplows and garbage trucks, not the HOA. But still, there was the illusion of effort. And besides, one summer they decided to contact a company to plant new trees all over the neighborhood! The fact that the company was owned by the son of the head of the HOA was totally coincidental."
All this money was being paid was essentially protection money from a mob without muscle. While it seems to remain a mystery as to where the money was going, the mother succeeded in taking the HOA down from the inside.
The poster of the story, Reddit user u/quietfangirl, had this to say about the fallout.
"What was the legal fallout, if any, of individual members of the HOA that defrauded the neighborhood?" - KFY
"Honestly? I'm not sure. I know that's a disappointing answer, trust me I'd love to know what their comeuppance was, but as... let's say thorough, as my mom is, she's not really the type of person to keep track of people she doesn't like. I'd say at the very least the individual members of the HOA are no longer allowed to volunteer on another HOA committee, but beyond that, no clue." -quietfangirl
