We've all heard this phrase uttered and felt obligated by societal structure or social commitments to remain exactly where we happen to be standing or seated at the time. Almost always, the person uttering this phrase knows that they have control or power and is counting on reminding others present of that fact in order to justify and pass off their own terrible behavior or hold sway in the face of dissent. Since they've offered you the option of an "out", they're then going to feel as if you are accepting whatever it is they're proposing or doing. This whole thing is an age-old psychological tactic to get people to fall in line.
So, what happens then, when this backfires? What happens when the others present have had enough and decide, "You know what? I think I will leave thanks?"
