We all believe that if we witnessed something terrible taking place, we'd certainly take some sort of action to help the person in trouble. Then why are there so many videos rampant online showing what psychologists like to call 'The Bystander Effect'? For those of you who don't know, this term, otherwise known as 'Bystander Apathy', is when something happens right in front of you and a bunch of other people's eyes, yet none of you step in or do anything. Why? For some weird reason, the presence of all these other human beings creates a diffusion of responsibility.
Secondly, we feel this need to behave in correct and socially acceptable ways. Basically, when others fail to react, we take this as a sign that a response is not needed or appropriate. What happened in this particular case is actually not a case of 'Bystander Apathy' but rather the opposite. Yay for modern heroes, am I right? Whoop whoop.
We all know of the existence of jerks. It's a part of life. Some individuals are not very considerate of their surroundings and find very elaborate ways to justify themselves for their selfish behavior. One woman stepped into a situation she deemed ridiculously inappropriate. She saw a rude and entitled lady parking her shopping cart in the middle of two handicapped spaces, and told her off. When that didn't work, she felt she had no choice but to enact some petty revenge. What ensued was pretty hilarious.
