Most people who have had to spend a large chunk of their adult lives renting have likely experienced some version of the roommate from hell. Whether it's someone who seems to thrive in their own filth and garbage, or a mooch who eats all your groceries while you're at work, or someone who likes to break things every time they get a little bit upset, there's no limit to how bad a bad roommate can be. Some roommates can be straight up sociopathic.
When u/Nymyane_Aqua's roommates made it clear to her that they didn't want her to renew her lease so that someone else could move in, u/Nymyane_Aqua objected to this idea and said that she planned on staying. Instead of having a civil conversation about it, like normal adults, OP's roommates instead launched a reign of terror, bullying OP until she eventually had no choice but to move out. But she didn't comply without first unleashing a little maliciousness of her own.
“I have a text from her saying she exempts me from rent as soon as I leave” replied OP.
“A screenshot with her name isn’t as legally valuable as a screenshot showing the actual phone number at the top. It’s usually recommended to delete her contact info (at least temporarily) so it shows the number vs the name if you need to use a screenshot of the text for legal reasons.” said u/WhiskeyCheddar.
“It is on Facebook message… I can’t get it with her number on it, I don’t think” said OP.
“I will! They’re going to try and claim I stole things or say I made a mess of the house but I intentionally took photos of everything before I left and had my landlady do a walkthrough of the house and my things with my mother who backed me up on what belonged to me.” explained OP.
“Your land lady seems excellent. It's hard to find reliable landlords nowadays.” said u/jastan10.
“Well it is shitty that she’s letting the tenants essentially decide who can and can’t renew leases and bully tenants out of the house, but I am grateful that she was understanding of how unstable they had gotten and she was willing to let me out without any financial repercussions” said OP.
“I’ll be couch surfing until I can find a new place, but thankfully I have a lot of friends who are happy to let me stay a night or two here and there. Till I get my place, I’ve moved all of my things into a storage unit. I live in a college town and so with a large portion of students graduating in January, I’ll probably be able to get a spot in less than two weeks- I’m already talking with five prospective places.” said OP.
“I’ve taken lots of photos of the place as I left and have also got photos of a lot of the furniture in my parent’s home from before I moved out of their house and into the one I just left” said OP.
The next day, OP updated r/MaliciousCompliance with a follow-up post about the immediate aftermath following OP's departure from the apartment from hell.
