Cat parents know that our feline friends are one of a kind. They're masters of their own story, they are silly, cute, cuddly, mean, and happy. Ya never know what you're gonna get. Sometimes, however, in the cat parenting community something turns out to be a pattern with some cats. For instance, orange/ginger cats all share one brain cell. Black cats tend to get adopted the least, yet turn out to be the sweetest. And, the most recent, is that there are many cats who like to do a little dance in front of their water bowl before or during drinking.
This came into the new cycle when one adorable little city went viral for his "water dance" online. Every time he was presented with a glass, mug, or even champagne flute of water, he would first do a little dance in front of the vessel holding his hydration and then proceed to drink. It was so adorable it went extremely viral. However, many other cat parents saw this and now we are seeing that this is actually a common thing for cats to do.
Why do cats do this? Well, there are many theories. One from ozzicat.com says that cats like to imitate running water while they're drinking because running water is more appealing to them. Betterwithcats.net says they paw around it like that because it is an instinct and it is them "claiming" the water bowl.
Whatever the real reason is, one fact we can rely on is that it is absolutely adorable and cat parents are going to post their feline friends doing the "water dance" as much as possible. And we definitely encourage that behavior! We've picked some of our favorite cats doing the 'ole water razzle dazzle below.
"Water dance time! Why? No idea."
