The worst kind of manager thinks they can do literally anything they want, like refuse to pay an employee as punishment. Unfortunately for these types of horrible bosses, there are labor laws that prevent this specific flavor of exploitation. Even if your employee quits their job on the spot, leaving you with an absolute catastrophe at work, you can't just not pay them for their time. That's what u/kissmaryjane tried to explain to their boss after they threatened (in writing!) to "charge" OP for not showing up to work.
“Boss should consult a lawyer before he shoots his mouth off.” said u/Joelsax47.
“Don't worry. Boss Googled it and it's not ‘ilegal.’” said u/TheOddPelican.
“Idk he’s so convinced he’s right that I think he secretly screwed me over and I’m just fucked in the ass super hard right now” said OP.
“Stupid people are always certain of themselves. Stop ignoring what everyone is telling you and do it.” said u/fdgjshbsdjfhbsdjfhv.
“Because the competent ones aren't stupid enough to break the law and rat themselves out in writing. You gotta be a grade A dumbass” said u/BetterWankHank.
“The smart ones have a text log that says ‘call me’” said u/tiny_poomonkey.
“The smartest ones want to talk about it in person.” said u/CMUpewpewpew.
“Honestly because the employer seems to believe it's not illegal (nor can they spell correctly) it might not be hard to get more out of them anyway” said u/Nacho_Dan677.
