Decorum in a situation you've seldom encountered can be difficult to discern. You suddenly find yourself overthinking every movement, act, and word that comes out of your mouth to try and seem like you know what's going on and belong in that situation.
So, then, what should you do when you have a contractor in your home? I'm sure we've all shared in the awkwardness of this experience at some point. Are you meant to try and help them or offer assistance? It would be polite to offer them a glass of water, but if you're sitting down to dinner, should you invite them to share in your meal? Or are they more than happy being left alone and going about their business like some sort of avant-garde interactive art piece? One thing is for certain: It can be incredibly awkward to have a stranger with whom you're not even communicating in your home.
People who do this as a job are more than used to what they should expect, simply from the vast amount of these situations they've been in exactly like this. But when you've had a contractor in your home once, maybe twice, in the last ten years, you have no idea what to expect from the situation. Even then, you'd probably never expect a contractor to bring their entire family along unannounced and proceed to invite them to make themselves at home in your home. The experience would be shocking at best.
