How far is too far? McDonalds, the restaurant known for pushing the limits and weights of Americans, seems to be asking this very question. Recently Twitter user @oluwotage went viral by pointing out the McDonalds hashbrown, famed main player of the beloved Dollar Menu, is now selling for a whopping $3.09. McDonalds is playing a dangerous game, and the President has been informed.

Normally, we’d take this as a joke. A classic clown-around from the famous clown about town, Ronald McDonald. Until you remember Ronald McDonald has been missing for over seven years. McDonalds has gone serious, and their prices reflect it. This is part of a larger trend in America of food prices surging due to inflation. McDonalds breakfast used to be insanely dangerous, but at least it used to be insanely dangerous and insanely affordable.

The tweet set off a conversation thread hotter than that infamous 1994 McDonalds coffee. The price has some calling for a Communist revolution, while others are suggesting alternatives, like the Trader Joe’s 10-pack of hashbrowns for 2.49. Once again, Trader Joe may be the last hero defending American consumerism.

Bless you, Joe. Curse you, McDonalds. Stay safe out there, potato fans.
