Spoilers Ahead:

After discovering the show was about an infiltrating mushroom species turning the world into mushroom-controlled zombies, you probably found yourself wondering if you could become vested in yet another zombie show. However, The Last of Us set a record with 8.2 million viewers streaming the final episode of the season, episode nine.

The Last of Us gripped Americans and now we're left wondering if Joel and Ellie will continue on together, go their separate ways when Ellie discovers Joel lied to her, or if another sequence of intense events will trauma-bond them even closer. Plus, we're left wondering if her immunity to the cordyceps could have actually been utilized to save the rest of the human population from the outbreak and essentially saved humanity.

If you're among the millions that have found themselves completely engulfed in this show, then you may be wondering if there will be a season two and when you can expect the story to continue.

Will there be a Season Two of The Last of Us?

The simple answer is “yes.” HBO has confirmed there will be a second season of The Last of Us. However, we've learned from interviews with Bella Ramsey who plays Ellie on the show that we'll have to wait quite a while for season two. On the Jonathan Ross Show, Ramsey revealed, “I think we'll probably shoot at the end of this year, beginning of next," so all of us who can't wait for another episode will be waiting a long time; most likely till the end of 2024 or beginning of 2025.

Via The Washington Post, the film's executive producer, Craig Mazin, stated it took the team 18 months from when they first started shooting to when season one was able to launch, so we'll definitely have some waiting to do before the next season hits.

Will the Cast Come Back?

One of the big questions for the main writer of The Last of Us, Neil Druckmann and producer Mazin was about the main cast returning. Pedro Pascal as Joel has already confirmed a return for season two. And, according to EW, Druckmann said this of recasting Ramsey as Ellie, “the only way we would ever, ever consider re-casting Bella is if she said, ‘I don’t want to work with you guys anymore.'”

So, we'll get to rejoin our favorite apocalyptic characters in season two as they traverse the wilderness and hopefully progress to a safer and milder time (though, I'm sure we're all hoping for the same incredible action this show has already produced).

We'll See You for Season Two

While waiting is the hardest thing, perhaps distance makes the heart grow fonder…? I'm struggling to believe that myself, but hold on to hope that The Last of Us season two is coming. Druckmann even tweeted that “Season 2 is already on its way! Endure & Survive!”
