Reddit is spilling the tea… apparently 'objecting' at someone's wedding is not something dramatic that happens in movies; it happens in real life, too. It sounds like an old fashioned tradition, and yes it's uncommon for wedding guests to break this huge wedding etiquette rule and object during a ceremony. So what are the origins of the phrase, 'speak now or forever hold your peace'? It actually originated from a Christian marriage ceremony. Back in medieval times, it was pretty hard for people to communicate, as they lived in different towns and couldn't exactly DM each other.
So folk came up with a plan to ensure people were not marrying multiple partners… the announced upcoming marriages for three Sundays in a row. That way, people were able to run around and spread the word, allowing others to come forth and proclaim their distaste and object if they knew the groom or bride were already married.
Redditers were quick to answer a question posed on r/askreddit, 'Has anyone ever been to a wedding where someone actually objected, and if so, how did that go?'… below you'll find some of the saddest and most hilarious replies. For more, here are some relatable relationship memes.
