Font - My SIL adopted a 2-year old dog, Ruby, about a year ago. Husband and I also have a dog and sometimes watch Ruby when SIL is away because they get along well.

Font - SIL is of the opinion that kibble is not good for dogs because "we don't know what is in the kibble". She has tried to feed Ruby packaged wet foods from various brands, but Ruby is picky and doesn't seem to enjoy them much. She has tried feeding Ruby other cooked proteins but Ruby also doesn't like them. In the last few months, SIL switched to feeding her 1 boiled chicken breast per meal. We've noticed that Ruby struggles to poop (gets into squatting position but nothing comes out) and wh

Font - We are concerned for Ruby's diet but not sure how to approach the situation, or if we are in the wrong. Can anyone advise? Thank you. Edit: Thank you for all of the advice. We will approach SIL gently with our concerns and encourage her to consult a vet nutritionist and use the BalanceIt.com website to formulate a meal plan for Ruby. We really care for Ruby and want her to live a long and healthy life. She hasn't shown any signs of malnutrition yet luckily (she's the most high energy dog

Font - Decent-Enthusiasm826 5 days ago Definitely a neglectful diet. Boiled chicken breast doesn't contain nearly enough essential vitamins and minerals. Sure, kibble is not an "optimal" diet for a dog, but contains the correct amount of macronutrients (protein, fat, fiber) and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals) to keep your dog alive and relatively healthy. If she wants to feed her dog a more natural, healthy diet then she needs to ensure the animal is getting the right mix of meats that inclu

Facial expression - jellyroll8 5 days ago . It's seriously bizarre that anyone would think feeding a dog solely chicken breast would be a good idea. Does this woman not know what nutrients are?

Human body - bearfootmedic. 5 days ago My guess is she has a weird diet too lol or some sort of neurosis. It doesn't take much for people to develop fixed beliefs with no basis in reality about things.

Font - pasquallien 5 days ago . If she wants to feed her dog a more natural, healthy diet then she needs to ensure the animal is getting the right mix of meats that include lean protein, fatty cuts, organ meats, etc and then fiber like berries, etc. She is starving her dog of adequate nutrition. Also she shouldn't do this without consulting a veterinary nutritionist first. Seriously. Poorly put together homemade diets make dogs sick.

Font - thisconditionallove 5 days ago Her dog is going to end up dying from vitamin and mineral deficiency. Has she tried farmers dog, Ollie's, small batch, all provide or other gently cooked formulated foods? Freeze dried food is another option like Stella and chewys or primal. Unless they are I'll, dogs won't starve, put the food down, if she doesn't eat it within. 20 mins, take it away and give at next mealtime.

Font - JCBashBash 5 days ago I mean you're not wrong, but as far as approaching it maybe query about how the dog is getting her carbs and iron etc, and about how this might not be doing well for her given her bowel troubles.

Font - nyxe12 5 days ago She only doesn't know what is in kibble if she refuses to read ingredient labels, and even then she's kidding herself if she thinks she would be able to do so and accurately determine if the ingredients are unhealthy. People have a lot of incorrect ideas about "bad" ingredients for dogs (ie, grain is not bad, despite the fad of grain free diets). Chicken breast does not have all the nutrients a dog needs and this is just neglect out of fearmongering. Pet food is not some

Font - purple_cats 5 days ago Maybe suggest she try a fresh type of food like freshpet? Those are at least formulated to be balanced. In some of them you can see chunks of ingredients, which might appeal to her. Or if she wants to continue cooking the food so she knows what's in it, Just Food For Dogs has a vitamin mix and recipes you can use to make a balanced diet. They have a chicken and rice recipe. Those recipes will have grains and veggies to provide things like fiber, and are formulated b
