We sincerely hope this employee doesn't fall for her boss's desperate shenanigans. Essentially, this Redditor had a meeting with her intimidating boss to inform them that she will be departing the company for a new job. After some pressing, OP revealed that the new position's salary was part of her decision-making.
That's when the boss decided to desperately try to manipulate the employee into staying by first offering to pay more. But wait, it gets worse. Next, the boss thought it would be a good idea to talk smack about the Redditor's new company and boss. Obviously, this is in poor form, and clearly, the Redditor has developed a toxic relationship with her boss that has allowed her to be much more easily manipulated.
But here's the thing (and OP, if you're listening, please take this into account when you're deciding what to do next): if she were to say yes to the counteroffer, OP's boss would immediately start looking for a reason to fire OP and/or start looking for a replacement out of spite. Now, it seems like the Redditor is not leaning in this direction considering her rhetorical question regarding why her boss didn't give her a raise this whole time if they could have done it. What's more concerning here, however, are the second thoughts she's having about her new company. Her current boss clearly had reason to make OP feel bad about their new career choice. If that wasn't clear to OP, then she has lots of self-reflection and self-esteem building to do.
