It's crazy that the psychological definition of a meme is "a unit of practice or belief through which a society or culture evolves and passes from one generation (or even one person) to the next." So essentially, memes are building blocks of culture. Weird to think about, right? Remember that next time you laugh at an advice animal meme. You are participating in culture. Neat.
Obviously, I'm no psychologist. I learned what I just explained in Psych 101. I write about memes for a living, so don't take me as an authority on anything meaningful. But memes are just interesting conceptually. The internet has evolved memes into Spongebob screencaps and out-of-context stock images that are made to relate to the viewer; make them laugh. But if you think about this original definition you realize that something as simple as a formal handshake would have been considered a meme prior to the online age.
Everything I just explained could be wrong. But who really cares? You came here to view and laugh at a collection of assorted memes. So why don't we cut to that? Here's what we collected for you.
