Food - Top Tales From Your Server

Font - I don't understand people who don't properly disclose the food THAT IS DEADLY TO THEM Medium Well, after seven years of food service work it finally happened. I gave a customer a severe allergic reaction. I've been extremely shaken up about it, especially since there's no way to know for certain if it's my allergy prep station technique that's off or if there was cross contamination at front of house.

Font - But basically what the customer put in the notes on their pickup order was "gluten free", but what they meant was "SEVERE CELIAC DISEASE". Having ordered online they can't have known that we have a very small and crowded kitchen with little ventilation, and bc of how gluten can travel we can really only make guarantees on non-gluten allergy orders. When people notify us of Celiac we will call them up and explain this so they can get a refund.

Font - So I set up a clean station for the other gluten-free tickets on the line, it's at the tail-end of a big rush so I'm changing gloves and being careful with what I touch. In the end that customer ordered something gluten-free for themself and something with gluten for their wife, and it all went into the same bag (because again, we weren't notified of the celiac).

Font - My supervisor gets an angry call today saying I made someone severely sick with my food. All day when a gluten free order came through my hands would start shaking, I know that I prepped the food as best as our kitchen allows I could have killed but holy someone. It had me reconsidering this job.

Font - edit thanks everyone for the comments and informative stories. And the horror stories ahaha. I will say at least (because I didn't make it clear) that my supervisor and my boss were nice all things considered and told me it wasn't my fault, but that now I do need to be double-checking with front of house that they're calling people when these orders come in

Font - This is why I don't break the "first one who asks gets the check" rule. Medium I had a ridiculous double today but this one particular table was the worst. It was a 5 top, a dad with his two adult daughters, and another older couple. The dad immediately said he would get the bill. I'm sure you all have a similar rule that the first person who asks gets the check because I'm not getting involved in your fight/drama. I always stick to this.

Font - Well, I f up. The two daughters approached me while I was by the bar and said they discussed it with everyone before hand and they would be on a bill with their dad and pay, and the older couple separate. I said Dad already said he would pay. They're like, we know, but it's Father's Day, blah blah blah, they were kinda pissy and it was THE ONLY TIME I ever said okay, because it was Father's Day and apparently the other couple agreed to this beforehand. Okay whatever. The service was great

Font - Bill time comes and I bring two separate checks. IMMEDIATELY the woman of the older couple snatches both books, rips out the receipts, and says we're paying for all of it. The daughters start yelling and trying to come around the table. Literally almost a physical fight. The woman shoves both receipts at me and a card. Like, you're the third different person who wanted to pay but I just gtfo because they were shouting at each other and she was shoving the receipts in my face.

Font - At the computer the daughters come up to me again mad as and were like "we're gonna do this right here. We're gonna watch you do it. Use her card for her check and this card for ours." They literally cornered me so I just did it, handed back both books and they stormed away. Came back to hand them to me personally, and they tipped $5 on their $120 check.

Font - Like, I know I screwed this situation, but the service was great so I know the tip was specifically about the checks and like, you can't conduct yourselves like adults and figure your out? Was this my fault for not having a backbone or what would you have done differently?

Font - We remade pancakes 4 times and she still wasn't happy Short This lady sent back her pancakes because they were hard. I said okay, bring her new ones. Same problem. So I remake them again (3rd time). At this point, she doesn't even talk to me, just walks by me and goes to the manager. I've already filled him in, and he's petty so he personally remakes her pancakes and gives them to her fresh off the grill. He waits for her to take a bite and she said that they were still cold and he basica

Font - She's mad that she didn't get what she wanted, so she filled her plate up with milk so when I picked it up, it spilled all over me and the table. But her daughter tipped me $15

Font - We want a pizza... also, our movie starts in 5 minutes. Short This middle aged couple walks into our very obviously busy establishment in the middle of a rush asking for a pizza. After placing their order and everything, they decide to tell me to please put it in a box instead because they have a movie to catch in... 5 minutes. so the next 15 minutes was spent listening to them flagging me down every 2 minutes going, "Is our pizza going to be done anytime soon? We have to go..." not my pr

Font - My boss kept letting people in 45 min AFTER close Short At my job, we close at 10pm. My boss (he's also the owner) likes to let people into the store after close sometimes up to 10:45pm. He does not allow us to lock the door or turn off the open sign, however, we are still expected to complete the closing duties (dishes, sweeping, putting things back in the fridge, etc). Usually not many customers come in after 10 but this night was different.

Font - Customers just kept coming at a steady rate up until 10:45pm, we were running out of ingredients and customers were mad they had to wait for our appliances to heat back up. I legitimately broke down crying both from a mix frustration and exhaustion. All my efforts in trying to complete the close list as we are expected too just went to waste and it brings the question: why even do the close list if customers are going to reverse our efforts? I feel like asking him to extend the hours woul

Font - Terrible prom kid Medium For two years, I worked for a hibachi restaurant where I was there go to server for big parties. The corporate policy was a max of 15 guests for server, but I was allowed up to 30. This was sometimes great. Rehearsal dinners and office holiday parties would sometimes tip an extra hundred to get another round of drinks after last call or arrange for their taxis. The problem was prom.

Font - Every weekend in May, I would have a big party of kids who made me miserable and barely tipped. The last such table motivated my transition into fine dining. It was your typical 10 or so couples, all dolled up for prom. Their meal went about as expected, and most of them paid in cash. After they paid, some people went to the bathroom and the rest gathered near the restaurant entrance.

Font - I went back to the table to gather receipts and tips, and one of the guys was taking all the cash off the table! He saw me coming, grabbed the last tip, and took off. He ran through his group and out the door. I followed him out, but I couldn't see him in the parking lot.

Font - Frustrated, I walked back inside and spotted his date coming out of the bathroom. I went right up to her. "Do you know you're dating a thief?" She looked confused. "Your date just stole all the tips your friends left for me. He's hiding in the parking lot."

Font - She turned bright red, apologized, and charged out the door after him. I never saw my tips, but I take solace in the fact that he probably had a prom night after that. I hope the girl left him and danced with other guys, and I hope she told the whole group what he did.

Font - Edit: I love all your suggestions of what I should have done. You are all probably right. Back then (2017) I was barely out of college, had plentiful experience of dine&dashers, and had about 10% of the confidence I have now. I just hope enough servers are reading this and do more than I did.
