Cringe is a wonderfully fun and meanspirited concept. But it really is what the internet is all about; the concentrated bullying of one or more individuals. Now, I'm not much of the bullying type. But I'd be lying if I said I haven't partaken in cringe content. I'd go as far as to say I've been actively consuming cringe since seventh grade. Ironic, because I was extremely cringe even by middle school standards. And I'm still cringe today!
For me, cringe content needs to be in a specific enough context to be funny. You can't just point and laugh at someone for having a particular interest. Liking anime isn't inherently funny, but someone who unironically dresses up as the Joker to express their damaged psyche on Facebook is most certainly cringe. There's also the added element that the individual who is cringe has it coming. A faux pas can be funny, but a man scorned for being rejected by a woman who proceeds to embarrass himself over text is definitively cringe.
It's a tricky subject. But you know cringe when you see it. We've collected a healthy dosage of cringe for you all to consume. You may laugh, frown, or cringe along with the rest of us. Take a look!
