Font - ...and it's for it to be exactly ten minutes! Our miniature dachshund is amazingly active-- he loves to hike, scramble up rocks, swim, dig, and chase like nobody's business! But he's always hated walks. He sighs when we suggest it, mopes his way out the front door, and then walks at a mediocre pace until we are close to the house, at which point he practically sprints home. As a result, we really only walk him 3-5 times a week and get exercise other ways.

Font - Today, he asked to go on a walk for the first time ever! I wasn't planning on taking him today as he'd already been walking around garden centers all day but he clearly requested it and beelined for one of his normal routes. I let him lead it and... he guided us down exactly one loop on the opposite side from when we normally go, then ignored the rest of the route and headed directly back home. I suppose he just had a very specific desire!

Font - edit: Wanted to note that we don't really need any advice here! He's a very happy and spoiled dog who is very capable of walking 30 minutes in the suburbs. He is 3 years old, in amazing health, maxes out his hikes at 12 miles, and very rarely has to do anything he doesn't want to. I asked him and he does agree with a lot of y'all though: he is a tiny baby boy who should have his own wagon and twice as much pampering!

Font - BadBassist 6 days ago I've worked out what my border collie wants in a walk: for it to be a run, and for it to last forever

Font - McDonnell Douglas DC8 6 days ago Five months is short to gain this level of communication. I love when my dog correctly calls a hike at her halfway point.

Font - Libby-the-doggo. 6 days ago Congratulations on finally "getting it." :) There are a number of aphorisms I say frequently about dog training, but, among them are: ● ● Dog training is simple, but not easy. You've discovered this by just now, finally realizing what kind of walks your boy wanted. Training can be mutual! You found this out by learning something from your dog today. :) • A dog will show you what their needs and desires are. No need to expand too much on how you found this out!

Font - StaubEll OP 6 days ago Oh definitely! I've known he'd prefer shorter or fewer walks and was honestly just surprised he did want to go on walks, just short ones. Unfortunately for him, we will still mostly go on longer walks as I need the longer walk and he'd prefer not to be left at home. But we're buddies, and I take him out to the arboretum or the river plenty often! And maybe, tiny walks more often, haha

Font - Mbluish 6 days ago Ha ha! My dog was terrified of noises when he was younger. He wanted to walk but motorcycles, bikes, and cars made him jump away. It was a scary world out there! He is much better now. 19 Reply Share StaubEll OP 6 days ago He's not even scared really, just maybe uninterested? When we've had neighbors we know well, he'll happily go to see them or to a place he loved. But even a very relaxed walk in a city or suburb with plenty of sniffing doesn't really appeal to him.

Font - puddncake 6 days ago Long walks are hard for little legged dachshund. Be mindful of his back and jumping. I loved our dachshund so much, great protectors. Reply Share 3 StaubEll OP 6 days ago He's very capable! His joints and spine are in great shape as of his last physical, and he will hike forever, essentially. He just doesn't like walks!

Font - scythematter - 6 days ago My Pomeranian is like this. Shuffles along on neighborhood walks (unless there's kids-she LOVES kids) but is a little goat on Hikes-hops over logs, skips across streams, scrambles up hills. Plus if it's too hard for her we just pick her up and Clip her Tacti-cool harness to one of our trail packs. Little dogs are great in hikes

Font - blondeandthebeast 6 days ago My 13 yr old black and tan has similar feelings. She will walk at a moderate pace, decide she is done and then turn around toward home. We let her off leash once we are in sight of the house and she bolts for the door and waits for us. It was cute the first time and it still cute the 3000th time
