Regardless of whether this is actually an expression, this guy manifested it into existence when he felt entitled to take over the entire armrest between himself and a stranger while attending a theater performance.
Normally this is a bad move. Sure, you might think that the space is there, so someone should use it—and why not you? But what you're missing here is the fact that the no man's land that is the armrest between two strangers should be regarded as a demilitarized zone between hostile countries in that no one should inhabit that space, and the space should never be entered except with explicit permission from the other party.
