Font - My business moved into a fairly nice building that was recently purchased by a company out of a big city. We were fine for a while even with building maintenance and ownership being pretty slow to respond to some minor issues.

Font - Little while ago the AC unit that happens to sit above our unit in the ceiling started leaking into the unit. Lease specifically says building HVAC is covered but landlord refused to reimburse us for the work that we had to have done to stop the leak. He told us to "sue him" knowing da in well 400 is not worth our time.

Font - I consider myself a fair person, albeit a little petty. We're an IT company and although we have a server rack I have configured our environment to use as little power as possible even though our power is included in the cost of the lease. Two reasons. 1. It's good for the planet. 2. It's reasonable to save the building money by shutting down unneeded servers during off peak times.

Font - Well, after that little discussion I decided that the rack of servers we have don't really need to be spun up and down every day to save the building money. That alone is worth at least 100/month in hydro. But then I was standing there infront of

Font - the rack yesterday looking at my 4U server filled with GPUs for password cracking thinking... most people use these for crypto mining but stopped because of expensive hydro.

Font - So now I've got a couple spare servers running some Monero mining at full tilt 24/7, i've got a couple VMs that spin up over night to do some monero mining(not very effective in a VM for generating crypto but very handy for driving up hydro costs) and then our nice password cracking server filled with GPUs is doing some etherium mining.

Font - I'm not 100% sure how much power we're using but my preliminary calculations put it around 500/month. And THAT I find particularly delicious.
  • 09
Font - Personally I have no need for any of this crypto so I figured this would be a nice opportunity to support the local food bank with monetary donations from our mining operation. WIN - WIN - WIN.

Font - Doctorphate OP. 16 hr. ago No, anything like that automatically voids the lease and then we're required to pay a percentage of the time left or the remaining months, whichever is more. ↑ 67 Reply Share

Font - trainbrain27. 11 hr. ago I love how Canadians call electric power hydro. I know it comes from hydroelectric, which was and is both a significant source and the name of the power company, but it's about as strange as calling the liquid that makes cars go by the name gas.

Font - 'Gasoline' comes from a knock-off name for Cazeline, which was the marketer's name with a hydrocarbon suffix, and has nothing to do with vapor.

Font - Eugene Carless was one of the first marketers of petrol. His last name and company name sound funny now, but he sold it as a solvent several years before the first motor car. None of this is relevant, but congratulations on reading this far. 21 Reply Share

Font - Dry_Emu_8842 - 2 hr. ago Get a couple of 1000w high pressure sodium lamps, the really inefficient type that produce mostly heat... Oh and keep your heater on day and night (electrical heater)... That should assist. 41 Reply Share
