'Force me to do Karaoke?': Non-singer pressured to perform at show-off's karaoke party, cue malicious compliance

Karaoke is not for everyone, and it's ten times worse when you have an actual good singer present. We all know why that is. They hog the microphone, they take it too seriously, they pick obscure songs (probably musical theater), and belt crazy notes that don't actually sound as good as they think. In short, karaoke is only fun when everyone in the group is on the same page about what this is. You can either have a room full of show-offs and legitimate singers, or you can have a room full of non-singers. Anywhere in between could be a recipe for danger.

 

This thread was posted to Reddit's r/MaliciousCompliance subreddit by u/Iborrador, who begrudgingly attended a friend's party where he was forced to participate in karaoke. He complied but only in a way that would reveal how silly this self-obsessed "singer" was acting. For his song, he chose the band Polyphia. For those of you who didn't know (I didn't), Polyphia is an instrumental band. So, this dude did participate like he was supposed to while also managing not to sing a word. 

 

Our self-obsessed "singer" host was ticked off for sure, and when she organized the next party, she made him sing something with lyrics. Of course, our Redditor managed to get away with another form of karaoke sabotage. Some years ago my friends and i started attending another friends parties, her parents have a big house with a ballroom. Theres a stage and a pretty good stereo with kareoke and if you had not guessed it she LOVES to sing, and is a decent singer

    Font - She then decided that there should be a competition and EVERYONE must join. I tried to tell her that im not a singer and to me that would just be humiliating. She didnt care cause EVERYONE must join. Fine, but i want to choose the song.

    Font - Just as it started 2-3 people recognized the song and cheered (I guess they figured out my plan) So i stood up there acting like i waited for the singing part to start and would a few times take up the microphone to fake the song starting, only to take it back down. When i was done i just casually waved to everybody and walked down. She. Was. PISSED. How dare i mock her? I just calmly said that im not a singer and thats the best i can do.

    Font - Well she ended up winning the contest since she was the only one who cared and most people would just vote for her. 2 weeks later she had another party and i was STRICTLY informed that if i wanted to join i had to choose a sing that had lyrics, Fine ill choose a song. Then it was my turn and i put on TEQUILA! So i just stood up there looking as awkward as i was able to, then when it was time i did a Power pose (or atleast attemped lol) and shouted TEQUILA, i shouted as hard as i could so

    Font - Well once again she was kinda angry but then told me that if i really didnt want to sing then i didnt have to. I thanked her and went down to my buddys to celebrate ***EDIT*** There was a laptop on the side for playlists etc, so i used that to put on Polyphia from youtube.

She was smart to stop me after 2 times, cause next time i would have chosen some death metal and absolutely destroyed my voice for a week to make a point hahaha :D ..

    Font - ZurEnArrhBatman 20 hr. ago I'm actually kinda sad that there isn't going to be another time. I'd have recommended "The Greatest Show on Earth" by Nightwish. It's mostly instrumental and the majority of lyrics are spoken rather than sung. The singing parts it does have could easily be butchered to help drive home the point. But the real kick-in-the- pants is that it's 24 minutes long during which no one else is able to compete, almost certainly throwing a wrench into her schedule.

    Font - Plus, there's a section where you get to grunt like a gorilla for a bit. There's also a point about 17 minutes in where anyone who hasn't heard it before is going to think it's over so you'd get the pleasure of telling her to sit back down and keep waiting.
