It's difficult to understate how prominent and prolific Disney was in the 90s. They literally came out with The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Tarzan, and The Rescuers Down Under, all in one measly decade. Who does that? Not DreamWorks, that's for sure.
I know I'm not the only one who thinks that the only reason that Shrek had the success it did was that it came out right after a decade of Disney's dominance at the box office. Obviously, the point of the movie was to satirize the sanitized fairy tales Disney has always been known for. Even though I love Shrek and its sequel (we do not acknowledge Shrek The Third in this house), I can't help but admit that the corny 90s Disney movies have aged better than the reference-filled orge film deriding the Disney Renaissance. If you're more of a Disney person than a Shrek person, you've come to the right meme list.
