Font - Supervisor wouldn't let me come in one hour early, so I worked hard enough that she and the entire sector didn't get raises that year. Which meant they were 5% behind peers for salary for the rest of their careers. Background: The police department that I worked for set a policy that patrol officers were evaluated based on their daily activity. Can't set quotas, etc, etc. So an officer is compared to all of the officers working under the same sector Sergeant. The stats are compiled each m

Font - Sector averages varied across geography and time of day. It was also pretty easy to stay within those parameters. My previous sector averaged 15 per day. Meet the goals and you get your yearly step increase, which is typically 5%. Miss those goals and you're a step behind your peers. Forever. This also translated to your overtime rate, which was a big portion of most officers' annual income.

Font - Let's say you're at $30/hr and getting about 500 hours of overtime each year. That's about $62,400 base pay and another $22,500 in overtime for an annual salary of $84,900. Get your 5% step increase and the same amount of work will net you $65,520 in base, $23,625 in overtime, and an annual salary of $89,145. Miss the step increase and you're still making $84.9K, while your peers are making $4245 more. This also translates to similar gains in pension, 401K, 457K, and IRA contributions ...

Font - I received a hardship transfer to days shift due to my son staying with me for the summer. It was only for six weeks. The hardship was that if I didn't get the transfer, I would have to find child care during the evening, which would have cost me about $5,000 for the six weeks. My lieutenant assures me that I will be put on the 7AM to 3PM shift as my wife works the 4PM to 12AM shift. This lets us trade off with my son and everyone is happy.

Font - Enter my new day's shift sergeant. The sergeant was a slug (read: lazy, do nothing supervisor, drawing a paycheck and only looking out for themselves). The sergeant puts me on the 8AM to 4PM shift. I approached her and ran through my story and advised her I was told by the lieutenants that I would be on the 7-3 shift. She laughed at me and said, "That's what babysitters are for."

Font - Ok. Fine. Enter the malicious compliance. The sector average for this sergeant was 7. You could literally get a 7 before you left the parking lot for your patrol shift. It wasn't a difficult achievement. I started getting daily activity of about 60-70 "marks." A "mark" was just a tally mark next to a category of work. I was basically doing more work than the entire section combined every single day.

Font - After a week of this, she comes to me and tells me I'm doing too much. Tells me that I'm destroying the sector average and it's going to wreck my review. (She didn't mention that it also wrecks her review and all of the officers under her.) I looked her dead in the eye and said, "Well, Sergeant, I just have so much energy because I get to sleep an extra hour. I just have to do something with that energy or I will go crazy." I let that sink in for a moment and then add, "If I had to get up

Font - Side note: Yes, I also sced all 6 officers that worked under her out of their raises, too. Funny thing about slug sergeants: they attract slug officers. Her sector has a terrible reputation for not being worth a daO. I didn't feel bad one bit. Nor did anyone else that had to pick up their slack on the day shift. I got picked up for a special assignment after the first month and transferred to HQ for about 4 years. My evaluation was based on entirely different metrics that year. I not only

Human body - tl/dr: Supervisor wouldn't put me on a shift that met my hardship needs. So I worked hard enough that the supervisor lost her step increase and made between $5K-$8K less than her peers for the rest of her career.

Font - bulletproofsquid Anyone else wanna talk about the fact that the precinct's immediate thought when forbidden to set quotas was "Okay, we'll let the officers set 'unofficial' quotas so we aren't technically doing it!" Vote Reply Share Astronautty69. Good point. Though these tally marks reaching 7 before you leave the parking lot sounds like much of it wasn't based on community interaction. Vote Reply Share

Font - zxcoblex So if you do extra work, you also lose your raise? How does that make any sense? Reply Share Vote . PickleLips64151 OP It's government. I'm not sure making sense is a requirement. Vote Reply Share ...
