'Update: HR called me begging me to come back': Boss fires developer during tantrum and deletes their account, HR calls when everything stops working

It's nice to know that you're needed and appreciated both in your work and in other areas of your life. But when appreciation is out of the question… a frantic phone call from your (very) recently ex-employer's HR department, proving that your necessity, will do.

It's not uncommon for those prone to giving into their anger to make unwise decisions in the midst of that anger, and that can put you in some unfortunate situations when that person is your boss—or holds some other form of authority over you. When you're in this position, you have to constantly let yourself be victimized by their tantrums, as even attempting to speak a word to your own defense will send them further reeling uncontrolled into rage.

  • That's how things came to a head when this developer found themself offside with their hostile, rage-prone boss, standing up for themselves during one of their boss's rage-fueled tirades. After some strong words were exchanged, their boss blocked the developer's number, so they decided to go to lunch. During their lunch, their email stopped working. They then found a barrage of messages from their boss that culminated, ultimately, in their effective firing.

    When sharing this initial experience with a popular online community, where users share employment stories and discuss workplace issues, the worker seemed optimistic and keen to move on to greener pastures, noting that their lunch tasted “extra lovely” once they knew they didn't have to return to that place.

    In the aftermath, their boss went through removing their access to the company's servers and, in a blundering error, deleted the developer's account in the process. Instantly, almost as if there was an actual karmic pendulum swinging back to knock the boss on their rear, everything stopped working. In deleting the developer's account, vital connection strings had been broken, meaning that the servers were no longer communicating with the company's software. 

    They shared their story of this aftermath in an update, telling of how things had played out since their firing and garnering a large response from readers who had been intently following the story.

He hung up on me and then literally 5 minutes later called me back like the petulant child he is (this is a grown aOman in his late 50's) yelling at me to "fug listen or find a new job" and proceeded to tell me how I have no right to tell him how to act and that he would fire me and claim misconduct so I can't claim unemployment. As soon as I started talking, he hung up AGAIN. And then blocked my phone number...

    Font - I decided to go to lunch cause I was supposed to go 2 hours ago. During lunch, I realized my email stopped working and then noticed a barrage of Teams chat messaging from him where he demanded I respond immediately or he will fire me. Oh well. I guess I didn't respond fast enough. That McDonald's Quarter Pounder tasted extra lovely today.

It's a shame you weren't able to get copies of messages sent before you were shut off but this is extremely hostile behavior. Pursue unemployment. Go through the whole thing. They will send you an appeal form, included with their decision. It's all part of the process, don't be discouraged. Make sure you send the appeal form back on time.     Font - This in turn fued up a ton of things because now none of the company's internal software can communicate with the SQL Servers across the company network and nobody knows where the connection string is... I know exactly where it is but you don't give away your secrets for free... As the Joker said, "if you good at something, you never do it for free".

    Font - HR called me begging me to come back because they have not been able to fix it all day... They asked me how much I wanted. What can we do to fix this? $250k, 50% up front. 50% remaining to be paid within 30 days of fixing this issue. And after that, going forward, I will make myself available on a consultancy basis at a base rate of at least $225 an hour which can go up depending on the kind of task I am assigned. All they have to do is create a service account and plug it in to the ODBC connections. Problem solved. OP just used his own credentials as a service account and a case can be made that he sabotaged the company by creating a logic bomb by using his account in the place of a service account.
