Landlords often escape their responsibilities by… not being responsible and ignoring tenants' complaints, duh. Of course, there are some good ones out there (we appreciate you), but the number of landlords I have personally gone through that would not answer my calls in regards to leaks (during a rainy season, no less), moldy ceilings and issues with running water are a dime a dozen, so I can relate to the OP.
What happened? Well, u/upset_pachyderm had the displeasure of renting from a landlord who did nothing about a leaking ceiling. OP reached out to her landlord multiple times, and each time, she was met with silence. You could probably hear a pin drop, that's how quiet it was. The final straw was when the ceiling actually collapsed, barely missing OP and her toddler.
Furious, she sent out a very detailed letter to her landlord, citing all the laws, and told him that unless it was fixed immediately, she was suing. Now, she probably would have sued, if she had had the money. Unfortunately, not everyone has the privilege of hiring a lawyer. Scroll down to read what happened next, and then check out this Karen who thought she was entitled to using one of the retail worker's phones (because obviously she runs the world and everyone else should just bow down at her command).
