Greetings, science fiction geeks. Do you ever feel like there aren't enough good sci-fi movies getting made these days? Whenever I feel this way, I go back to the old classics. Last night I rewatched John Carpenter's The Thing, and I'm still convinced it's one of the best sci-fi movies of all time. It's a perfect movie, really. Great cast, isolating atmosphere, incredible practical effects, killer score—what more could you ask for out of a sci-fi horror movie? For me, the best part about The Thing is the tension that builds in the quieter, paranoia-filled moments between characters after they discover the alien's ability to absorb, copy, and assimilate other life forms. Not to mention that The Thing probably has one of the best endings ever. If you haven't seen it yet, you're really missing out.
