When you want to make a demand to show how much authority you have, you're generally not going to be thinking with anything but your ego. This brainless decision-making is bound to get you in a whole heap of trouble.
It's no secret that petty managers love to tell workers to put their phones away. Within certain industries, it's sometimes their sole managerial function; lord forbid they actually took the time to learn any other administrative or operational skills. The idea here is that treating workers like humans and giving them basic creature comforts will cause them to be less efficient, and this is the same reasoning used when forbidding workers to sit down for the entirety of their eight-hour shift.
Generally, this goes without consequence, occasionally opening the door for a little malicious compliance from workers who have been instructed not to answer their phones by their managers who are now trying to reach them. The result here was more disastrous, causing a walkout that cost the company a major contract.
