This world is chaos, and the more you try and control it, the more it's going to fly back in your face. As with anything, adding more opportunity for uncertainty in what needs to be a certain situation is eventually going to come and bite you. A commute to the office in a major city is a little bit like that; small traffic incidents can cause a chain reaction that creates delays that can increase your commute time two, three, or even four-fold.
Braving the Seattle traffic is a bit like this; I was once in a situation where I needed to commute 30 minutes down I-5 in the city. Depending on the weather and if there had been an accident, the drive would take anywhere from just that long up to two hours. So, of course, the only option I had was to leave two hours early every day, preventing the risk of being late to work, but meaning that I would be stuck waiting for an hour and a half for the office to even open on days when traffic was clear.
So, when an important presentation is on the line, but your boss still demands that you come into the office to give a presentation despite your warnings of what might occur if you brave miserable city traffic—well, they've got to deal with the consequences.
