Watching your beloved fur baby grow old is always bittersweet. On one hand, it's profound and lovely to be able to grow old with such a special soul by your side. On the other hand, age is a sign that the end is getting closer and closer. And just like for aging loved ones, you must take special measures to care for them. In this instance, we're talking about a senior cat named Simi. She is 15 years old and suffers from dementia. When a kitty has dementia, much like humans, they often get lost, confused, and scared. They forget where the litter box is, they don't understand why you're not home, etc. It's heartbreaking.
Simi's pawrent kept finding his feline friend lost and crying out for help at home. So he decided to take action. He made her a cat "studio apartment" out of an old large dog crate. This became Simi's own space and it had everything she needed, from food to litter box. When he's home and able to keep an eye on her, he leaves it open for her to waltz around as she pleases. However, he says she rarely leaves her apartment now. When he is out of the house, he makes sure she is set up all nice and cozy in her studio apartment, closes the gate, and keeps her from getting lost.
He says he has found great improvement with Simi since moving her into her own personal space. Her stress levels have basically gone down to 0, and because of that her digestion and sleep are better. Now, she is able to go back to living her best cat life! He urges, however, that this isn't always the answer to cats with dementia—to other cats, it might even make it worse. So it's really all about seeing what works for your aging cat baby. See Simi's results below! (And watch the full video here)
