I'm not at the age where I want to be called mam. I don't know if I'll ever be at the age where I'll want to be called mam to be honest. It seems to get even worse when you're dating someone and they start using that not-so-catchy title to address you, even if it's playful. Dating a southern boy might put a little leeway on the subject, but other than that it's a big no from me.
Somewhere down the line the word mam became this negative connotation when having to do with age. Aging obviously isn't a bad thing, but it's just not the most appealing word for women. I'd rather stick with Miss or Mrs. my entire life, thank you.
I might let the word slide if you're much older and are genuinely trying to be polite. Maybe I'm too picky on this seemingly innocent subject matter, but tell me it wouldn't bother you a little bit if that's how you're always addressed. If you've seen the episode of Will & Grace where Grace is called mam at barely 30, you'll know what I mean.
