Charge me for two hours? I'll take the two hours.

This just happened today, so I'm still worked up over it. I booked a moving company to move 3 items; two medium sized dressers and one foam mattress.
  • 04
The move was 2k in distance and I requested two movers and a big truck. Messaging back and fourth with the owner he offered me a "spot for 12-1pm" which I accepted. The movers finished

moving everything out of my place and into their truck after just 20 minutes. They then inform me that there is a minimum 2- hour charge. WHAT? They told me to call the owner who simply

said if I wanted my things moved to my new place I had to pay for two hours. I was livid, my price just doubled and I still only got an hour of labour. My malicious compliance? Okay Mr. Owner

Man, if you want to charge me for two hours then I get two hours of their time. I then got the movers (two university students) to sit down in the shade and enjoy an hour break. :)

Gertrudethecurious. So glad you didn't take it out on those poor students. They probably only got minimum wage. Good for you!

dubloe7 My favorite version of this was at a trade show where you rent out booths. When the guy got the booth he rented the carpet was absolutely filthy. He went to try and find a vacuum he could borrow, and was told that it was union rules that only the union members could use a vacuum in the booths, not the clients. So he

says fine and asks how much, and of course the price was something ridiculous per hour. The vacuumer was done after five minutes and went to leave, but the person renting the booth made him stay for the entire hour, vacuuming.

Nesrynn I so expected this to turn out with the poor movers having to move useless things. I'm so glad it turned out to be wholesome. That was aggressively wholesome tho

kevin_k Did you sign something acknowledging the 2- hr minimum? Because if he offered you a "spot for 12-1PM", you won't be surprised when I tell you that's only one hour. If he didn't tell you about a minimum, you weren't obligated to pay.

cocosailing Moving is such a sketchy business.

MjrJWPowell Them not telling you that there was a 2 hr minimum is illegal, I think. I worked at a pool company with a large service department. The service coordinators always told the customers there was a 1.5 hr minimum on all service calls.
