Dating is not always easy, in fact it's usually hard. Opening up about oneself and building trust isn't easy. We could argue pedantically all day about white lies, or a necessary truth versus an absolute truth. I think we can all agree that some things are better left unsaid. Lying about liking your partner's mother's food is one thing, and lying about seeing someone on the side is another.
Like when your wife asks you if you like her outfit, you can say a semblance of truth, but you need to say it in a nice way. Don't let her go out looking bad, but don't tell her so bluntly, 'you look bad.' The line is fine between what you should say and what you shouldn't, or how to say something in a nice way. But it's all encompassed in learning how to communicate with someone, with learning empathy.
