The tension continued to build as the defenders prepared for the impending siege, with the deepening darkness serving as a metaphor for the dire straits they found themselves in. Or at least that's how I think of it. Lord of the Rings is my favorite fantasy series of all time. Yes, even more so than Harry Potter, and that is saying something.
