Snappy the Huggable Snapping Turtle Proves to be an 85lbs Cuddle-Machine After 31 Years With a Loving Owner

Snapping turtles are pretty spooky, right? They're the closest thing we have on Earth to a living dinosaur and they can take your fingers off in one fell swoop of their mouse trap jaws. Oh, and they're basically invisible when they're in their natural habitat because their camouflage is so good, so let's just hope you never run into one in the wild on accident.

Except, not all snapping turtles are bad guys. One man has proven over the last 30+ years that his best friend is a particularly cuddly snapping turtle that he appropriately named Snappy.

Snappy was found in a bog three decades ago. He was the size of a quarter and just a tiny, newly hatched baby fighting for his life on the banks of the swamp, and his life was forever changed when he was plucked up from the muck by his future dad. Apparently, everything we know and fear about snapping turtles is entirely irrelevant when they're raised in captivity and handled frequently by their loving hoomans.

For Snappy, life has been plush, living in his homemade ponds and receiving daily cuddle sessions from his dear ol' dad who's dedicated his life to the study and rehabilitation of other turtles in the wild. While Snappy clearly remains his favorite pet, he's helped save all kinds of turtles and has used his fame to raise awareness of these prehistoric beauties.

So if you've ever wanted your own real-life Pokemon/dinosaur/pet, look no further than a snapping turtle! As long as you don't really need your fingers all that much, you can always take a bet that you'll find a hidden gem like Snappy out here in the boggy wilderness.
