Growing up poor, you never realize you're poor until one of those dirtbag rich kids comes to school with the newest Gameboy, rubbing it in the faces of every wistful child in your class and claiming that he has another one at home. Sadly, a lot of folks grew up wishing they could climb the economic ladder and become as rich as that snide little kid so that they too, could buy the latest gaming consoles in pairs. However, as we get a little older, we all realize how tough it is to jump classes from poverty, to lower class, and then to middle class.

From there, you're still lightyears away from the upper class, but at what point do folks from the bottom believe that they've made it?

Well, we all have some pricey commodity that is so alien to our experience in this world, that it becomes a symbol of wealth and affluence–a sign that you've 'made it'. For me, if I ever have a refrigerator with a built-in water filter and an ice maker, it means I've reached the epitome of success.
