'I feel mortified': 28-year-old panic-quits dental assistant job after getting nearly 0 training, then gets rejected to work at a cafe for being “too old”

  • It's 2024, being in your late 20s is NOT old. Seriously, tf?? Have we truly gone that downhill in society that we're back to thinking life ends after your 20s? Come on now, do better. 

    Unfortunately, it would appear that some Karen boomer business owners would think so… Reddit user teamakesmepee recently panic-quit her dental assistant job. She was hired with no experience under the guise thinking she would be thoroughly trained and learn a new helpful skill for her future. She was told she would be at the front desk, but low and behold, they threw her to the wolves. She begged for training, but instead they just told her to assit on several root canals. That was the last straw. She was not excited to do that. But she figured, she's only 28 years old, she has plenty of time to restart a career. So she quit and started applying anywhere she could. 

    She got an interview at a local cafe, but halfway through, the owner learned her age and said they don't hire anyone over 24… She was mortified. She left, but her ego was crushed. What would you have done?

    ( I just got rejected at an interview for being "too old" I'm 28 I feel mortified. I've been working a crummy job for a house cleaning company for nearly 4 years and started working a second job as a dental assistant a few months ago.

    Dental assistant job I panic quit because the dentist wasn't treating me right and they didn't train me yet expected me to help with procedures on patients that I knew nothing about and would get mad when I didn't know what I should do. They asked me 2 weeks ago to help with 3 root canals in a row but wouldn't tell me what I would be doing, so I quit.

    I've never worked in food service before but I've been so desperate for a new job and the job market is tough, and I decided to apply to a new cafe that opened near me in the last year. They ask to interview me. I go into the interview and like 5 minutes in the woman interviewing me asked if I was over 21 because they were thinking of serving things like beer and wine at some point in the near future. I tell her I'm 28. She

    pauses, gives me a weird look and says "did you not see that we only want people between the ages of 16- 24?" And tells me she's sorry but I'm not the right candidate because I'm "too old to work here" I left and I literally wanted to die. I have never felt so embarrassed in a while. The online ad had nothing about an age requirement but I missed in the storefront window ad that they were only hiring ages 16-24.

    LadyBug_0570 . 40 min. ago So they can overwork and underpay them and do all kinds of things that the younger people may not know is illegal. When I worked in a job like that when I was younger, I had no idea it was illegal for them to force me to work overtime without pay.

    Throwawayhelp111521 2 hr. ago That's age discrimination. Normally, you can't give an age range unless you have a justifiable reason.     The truth is the reason why that lady didn't want to hire you, is because she doesn't expect you stay around, she assumes you have enough work experience that you could easily find a job elsewhere, a lot of times these type of employers like younger employees because they can get away with abusing them more because they don't have many work options. You'll find a better place to work at, best of luck!
